Backcharge

You're probably overpaying your utility. We'll find out for free.

Backcharge reads your electric and gas bills line by line, checks the arithmetic against the meter readings, and flags the charges that do not hold up — the ones nobody catches because nobody reads a utility bill that closely.

Built for organizations with multiple meters — manufacturers, senior living, schools, municipal authorities, and nonprofits.

What we check

Every bill is validated arithmetically before any finding is raised. If the numbers we extracted do not reconcile against the bill's own totals, that bill is set aside rather than reported — we would rather miss a finding than send you a false one.

Sales tax charged in error

Pennsylvania exempts metered electricity and gas for municipal authorities, political subdivisions and charitable organizations. Exempt entities are still billed sales tax more often than you would expect.

Charges without usage

Periods billed with charges against zero recorded consumption — usually a meter that stopped reporting while the account kept accruing.

Wrong rate schedule

Accounts sitting in a rate class their demand no longer fits, or hovering close enough to a kW band boundary that the schedule should be revisited.

Estimated read streaks

Consecutive months billed on estimates rather than actual meter readings, which defer a true-up that eventually arrives as one large correction.

Supply above the price to compare

Third-party supply priced above what the utility would have charged as default supplier — a gap that persists quietly, month after month.

On one bill we tested, third-party supply ran 13% above the utility's price to compare.
